Serena Williams made history after defeating Caroline Wozniacki at the Women’s Singles US Open 2014 Championship in New York. With this victory, Serena earns her 18th Grand Slam title and joins the ranks of tennis legends and hall of famers, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. She also takes home around $4 million in championship winnings and bonuses.

But, perhaps the bigger story is the camaraderie, good sportsmanship and grace displayed by both women throughout the match and beyond. During the match Serena would clap her racquet in recognition of stellar winners hit by Caroline. After the match, Wozniacki congratulated Williams with accolades and a warm, open smile.

“Congratulations to Serena, you deserved to win today. You were better than me,” Wozniacki said. “You’re an inspiration on and off the court.” “Now you’re going to owe me a drink.” The two friends hugged and showed genuine joy for each other as they accepted their places in history.
